Hoi An Vietnam
Hoi An is the consummate tourist destination. Hoi An is full of Europeans traveling through and some have stayed to live. It seems that this city has the most concentration of Europeans in such a small area here in Vietnam that I have visited.
The strangest people here and in Vietnam in general to me are the young Europeans who travel like nuts and can not even remember where they have been. They get on my nerves. It must be nice to take a year off and travel the world. They are living in back packs however. I can only imagine where they get there money to facilitate such a trip. But, I think my impatience with them stems from my three years of living in Europe during the Cold War. If it weren't for us they would be speaking Russian now I think. Their governments spent tons of money on their schools and soccer fields while we Americans blustered up their defense. Many of the American guys I served with could not read and write well. Many had just come back from the Vietnam War to spend out the rest of their military obligation in Germany. It irks me now when people in America talk about how wonderful the Europeans are.
One American guy that teaches English over here mentioned to us that many of the very young Europeans traveling around here have never gone to college and have not been well schooled in foreign cultures, hence their rude behaviors - just the opposite of what Americans might imagine of Europeans. Anyway, I digress.
Hoi An is a nice place for your female companions. Heide found some nice cloths. She used the shop that was recommended to me last year by our hotel staff in Saigon. The niece of the hotel owner in Saigon works in this shop here in Hoi An. More evidence of the networking prowess of the Vietnamese. Anyway, Heide is very pleased with her new cloths.
Hoi An is the kind of city out there in the world a guy should see at least once if one is able. I myself prefer the endless catacomb back streets of Saigon (population six to eight million - no one seems to know) where you could wander for weeks and never see a white person.
Speaking of Saigon, we leave today for there at 8:00 p.m. on Vietnam Airlines. It will be like going home for me, I have stayed there five times in the past.
